February is the lake at its emptiest. It is also the driest month of the year, and by the last week the days are noticeably longer. Here is what you would find, and who it suits.

Is February a good time to visit Lake Garda?

Not for most visitors. Highs average 9.6 °C and nights sit around freezing, with fewer than five rainy days. That is good walking weather, but there are no passenger ferries, Gardaland is closed and the Monte Baldo cable car stops for maintenance after 21 February.

We rate it 1 out of 5 because so little is open. The exception is carnival: Arco in particular puts on several days of parades, and room prices are at their lowest.

What's open in February

  • Limited Ferries — Only the Torri del Benaco–Maderno car ferry until 12 March 2027.
  • Closed Gardaland — Closed between Magic Winter (ended 6 January 2027) and the spring opening.
  • Limited Monte Baldo cable car — Winter season ends on 21 February 2027, then the lift closes for maintenance.
  • Closed Lidos and beach clubs — Beaches are public all year. Staffed lidos and beach bars are seasonal businesses with no shared calendar; expect them shut in February.
  • Closed Campsites — The large lakeside sites reopen from late March.

Events in February

  • Carnevale di Arco

Two weekends before Lent (7–8 and 13–15 February in 2026) Arco

The biggest carnival on the lake, which marked 150 years in 2026. Dates move with Easter each year.

  • Bardolino carnival parade

A Saturday in carnival season (7 February in 2026) Bardolino

Afternoon parade of masks and floats with a children’s area.

What to pack

  • Warm coat and a scarf for the Pelèr on northern mornings
  • Walking shoes: this is a month for paths, not beaches
  • A lighter layer for sunny afternoons
  • Something to dress up in if you are coming for carnival

Where to base yourself in February

Arco has the carnival and a sheltered position below its castle rock. Desenzano and Salò are working towns with restaurants and shops open through the winter, and both have long, level lakefronts for a walk in the sun.

What February feels like

Dry and crisp. Rainfall averages just 36 mm, the lowest of any month, and sunshine climbs to nearly six hours a day. On a clear day the snow line on the mountains stands out sharply against the water, which is one of the better reasons to come now.

The lake is at its coldest of the year. The north-shore readings we use show 9.3 °C in February.

Carnival, and when it falls

Carnival follows the church calendar, so check the date before booking. In 2027 Easter Sunday is 28 March, which puts Shrove Tuesday on 9 February and the main carnival weekends in the first half of the month. In 2026 the towns spread their parades widely: Arco and Bardolino in early and mid February, others as late as March.

Our Lake Garda events page keeps the running list. If you come for Arco, stay in Arco or neighbouring Riva.
