Arco
Northern tip
A castle on a rock, Habsburg gardens and Italy's best sport climbing, ten minutes inland from the lake
Lake Garda weather · February
February is the driest month at Lake Garda and still wintry: 10 °C days, carnival parades and hardly any visitors.
February is the lake at its emptiest. It is also the driest month of the year, and by the last week the days are noticeably longer. Here is what you would find, and who it suits.
Not for most visitors. Highs average 9.6 °C and nights sit around freezing, with fewer than five rainy days. That is good walking weather, but there are no passenger ferries, Gardaland is closed and the Monte Baldo cable car stops for maintenance after 21 February.
We rate it 1 out of 5 because so little is open. The exception is carnival: Arco in particular puts on several days of parades, and room prices are at their lowest.
The biggest carnival on the lake, which marked 150 years in 2026. Dates move with Easter each year.
Afternoon parade of masks and floats with a children’s area.
Arco has the carnival and a sheltered position below its castle rock. Desenzano and Salò are working towns with restaurants and shops open through the winter, and both have long, level lakefronts for a walk in the sun.

Desenzano del Garda
Southern shore
The lake's biggest town: a Venetian harbour, Roman mosaics, a Tuesday market and the best nightlife
Salò
Western shore
The longest lakefront on Garda, a proper old town and the best shopping on the western shore
Dry and crisp. Rainfall averages just 36 mm, the lowest of any month, and sunshine climbs to nearly six hours a day. On a clear day the snow line on the mountains stands out sharply against the water, which is one of the better reasons to come now.
The lake is at its coldest of the year. The north-shore readings we use show 9.3 °C in February.
Carnival follows the church calendar, so check the date before booking. In 2027 Easter Sunday is 28 March, which puts Shrove Tuesday on 9 February and the main carnival weekends in the first half of the month. In 2026 the towns spread their parades widely: Arco and Bardolino in early and mid February, others as late as March.
Our Lake Garda events page keeps the running list. If you come for Arco, stay in Arco or neighbouring Riva.
Cold and mostly dry: an average high of 9.6 °C, a low of 0.1 °C and 36 mm of rain over about five days. It is the driest month of the year.
Only for a quiet, cheap break or for carnival. There are no passenger ferries and the theme parks are shut. If you can wait, April gives you a working lake.
Until 21 February 2027, when the winter season ends. It then closes for maintenance and reopens for the summer season in spring. Details are in our Monte Baldo cable car guide.
In the weeks before Lent, so it moves each year. In 2026 Arco held its carnival on 7–8 and 13–15 February. In 2027 Shrove Tuesday falls on 9 February.
Yes, by bus and car. The shore roads are open all year, and trains serve Desenzano and Peschiera on the south shore. See our Lake Garda trains guide for the rail side.
