Lake Garda weather · August
August at Lake Garda is as hot as July with the warmest water of the year, and it is the busiest, most expensive month.
August is when Italy goes on holiday, and a large part of it comes here. The weather is excellent. Whether the month is right for you depends on how you feel about sharing it.
The weather says yes; the crowds say think twice. Highs average 30.2 °C, nights 18.7 °C, and the lake is at its warmest of the year at about 23 °C.
The two weeks around Ferragosto, the national holiday on 15 August, are the fullest of the year: roads queue, ferries and beaches are packed and prices peak. Families tied to school holidays will still have a good time with planning. Anyone with a choice should look at the last week of the month or at September. We rate it 3 out of 5.
Patron saint’s festival in Toscolano Maderno, with fireworks over the gulf of Maderno on the evening of 11 August.
Riva’s fairytale festival, held since 1950, with shows for children in the old town and a firework display over the lake.
These are the places that keep some calm in August. Tignale and San Zeno di Montagna are up in the hills, away from the shore-road traffic. Gargnano and Toscolano Maderno, on the western shore, get fewer day trippers than the south and the Veneto side.

The first three weeks are July again: hot, sunny and dry, with about nine hours of sunshine a day. The water has had two months of heat and is at its most inviting.
Towards the end of the month the pattern often breaks with heavier thunderstorms; the monthly rain total (68 mm) is a little above July’s. Evenings begin to draw in.
Travel at the edges of the day. Be on the road or at the ferry pier before 9am and you will see a different lake from the one at 11. Leave the car where you are staying and use the boats; our ferry prices and passes page explains the day tickets.
Choose beaches you can walk to, or the less obvious ones in our beaches map. If you want Gardaland, avoid the week of the 15th.
For weather and swimming, yes. For space and value, no. It is the busiest and most expensive month, especially from about 8 to 22 August. September gives you warm water with far fewer people.
It is the warmest of the year, about 23 °C in the north-shore readings we use (23.2 °C). Shallow southern beaches can feel warmer on calm days.
The Italian public holiday on 15 August and the centre of the national summer break. Around the lake it means full hotels, heavy traffic and festivals with fireworks in many towns.
The average high is 30.2 °C and the average low 18.7 °C, almost the same as July. The second half of the month is usually a touch less intense than the first.
Go up or go west. The hill villages of Tignale, Tremosine and San Zeno di Montagna are calmer, as is the stretch of shore around Gargnano.
