Train from Lake Garda to Milan: Planning a Day Trip

A day in Milan from Lake Garda: which station to use, the morning trains, the last trains back and what is near Centrale.

Journey time

Cost
€10.50 to €41 each way
How often
Regional hourly; Frecciarossa roughly hourly from Desenzano

Milan works well as a day out from the southern half of the lake. The train is direct, it drops you at Milano Centrale with the metro underneath, and you can be back for a late dinner.

This page is about the return trip: which lake station to start from, when to leave and the last sensible train home. If you are arriving from Milan with luggage, the train from Milan to Lake Garda is the page you want.

Quick answer

Leave from Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione if you can: it has both the hourly regional (about 1h 28min, €10.50) and the most Frecciarossa trains (54 minutes). From Peschiera del Garda the regional takes 1h 38min and costs €12.

For a full day, take the 07:07 or 08:07 regional from Desenzano and come back on the 19:25 or 20:25 from Milano Centrale. The last direct regional back left Milan at 21:25 when we checked; later trains ended with a replacement bus.

  1. A flexible day: any train out, any train back

    Trenord regional (RE6)

    • About 1h 28min from Desenzano, 1h 38min from Peschiera
    • €10.50 from Desenzano, €12 from Peschiera, each way
    • Hourly. From Desenzano at 07 past, 06:07 to 21:07 on weekdays
    • No booking. Station machines, trenord.it or Trenitalia

Leaves Peschiera at 57 past the hour and Desenzano at 07 past, arriving at Milano Centrale at 35 past. There is an extra faster train from Desenzano at 07:22. Buy both tickets in the morning so you are not queueing at Centrale in the evening, and stamp each paper ticket just before you use it, not both at once.

  2. A longer day in the city

    Frecciarossa (Trenitalia)

    • 54 min from Desenzano, 59 min from Peschiera
    • From €10.90 booked ahead; €17.90 to €41 a week ahead
    • About 14 direct a day from Desenzano, 6 from Peschiera
    • Reserved seat on a named train. Trenitalia site or app

Morning commuter-hour trains are the expensive ones: the 08:23 from Desenzano was €41 a week ahead and the 07:16 had sold out. Mid-afternoon trains were the cheapest. Because the ticket is tied to one train, a fixed Frecciarossa home takes the flexibility out of the day.

  3. Cheap advance fares from Desenzano

    Italo

    • 54 min from Desenzano
    • From €8.90
    • Several a day
    • Italo site or app only

Runs Desenzano to Milano Centrale. Italo sells a same-day return fare. Tickets are not interchangeable with Trenitalia or Trenord, so do not mix an Italo outward leg with the assumption that you can use the same ticket on a regional back.

Step by step

  1. Get to Desenzano or Peschiera station

From the west shore, Arriva's RegioLink 204 from Salò, Manerba, Moniga and Padenghe runs to Desenzano station every half hour from 7:00. From the east shore, ATV buses from Garda, Bardolino and Lazise serve Peschiera.

  2. Take a train between 07:00 and 09:00

The 07:07 regional from Desenzano reaches Milano Centrale at 08:35, the 08:07 at 09:35.

  3. Use the metro from Centrale

Metro lines M2 and M3 stop under the station. M3 runs to the Duomo.

  4. Be back at Centrale for the 19:25 or 20:25

These reach Desenzano at 20:48 and 21:48, and Peschiera nine minutes later. Check your last bus from the station before choosing.

From Milano Centrale to the towns

  • From Sirmione Arriva bus LN026 or ferry to Desenzano, then train from Desenzano
  • Salò RegioLink 204 to Desenzano station (first bus around 7:00), then train
  • Manerba del Garda RegioLink 204 to Desenzano station
  • Peschiera del Garda Walk to Peschiera station; regional at 57 past the hour 1h 38min to Milan
  • Lazise ATV bus to Peschiera station, then train
  • Bardolino ATV bus to Peschiera station, then train
  • Garda ATV bus to Peschiera station, then train

Which station to use from which shore

West and south-west shore (Salò, Manerba, Moniga, Padenghe, Desenzano, Sirmione): Desenzano. It is nearer Milan, cheaper and has more fast trains.

East shore (Lazise, Bardolino, Garda): Peschiera, which is where the east-shore buses go. The regional costs €1.50 more each way and takes ten minutes longer.

North (Riva, Torbole, Limone, Malcesine): Milan is a long day from here. You need a bus to Rovereto, Peschiera or Desenzano before the train even starts, so consider an overnight stay or pick Verona instead.

Timing the day and the last trains back

Direct regional trains from Milano Centrale to the lake leave at 25 past each hour. On the weekday we checked in October 2026 the last one that ran all the way by rail was the 21:25, arriving at Desenzano at 22:48 and Peschiera at 22:57. The 22:25 and 23:25 switched to a bus at Brescia and arrived after midnight.

The last direct Frecciarossa left Milan at 20:45 for both stations. If you want dinner in Milan, book that one in advance and line up a taxi at the lake end, because the buses will have stopped: the RegioLink 204 from Desenzano runs until 23:00.

Trenord’s own route page gives 16 trains a day in each direction and a first train from Desenzano just after 06:00.

What is near Milano Centrale

Centrale is a terminus on the north-east side of the centre, not in the old town. The metro is directly below the concourse, with M3 for the Duomo and M2 for Porta Garibaldi and the Navigli.

With around nine hours in the city you have time for the Duomo and its roof, the Galleria and one museum or a proper lunch, not all of Milan. Tickets for Leonardo’s Last Supper are timed and sell out well ahead, so book those before you book the train.
