August is when Italy goes on holiday, and a large part of it comes here. The weather is excellent. Whether the month is right for you depends on how you feel about sharing it.

Is August a good time to visit Lake Garda?

The weather says yes; the crowds say think twice. Highs average 30.2 °C, nights 18.7 °C, and the lake is at its warmest of the year at about 23 °C.

The two weeks around Ferragosto, the national holiday on 15 August, are the fullest of the year: roads queue, ferries and beaches are packed and prices peak. Families tied to school holidays will still have a good time with planning. Anyone with a choice should look at the last week of the month or at September. We rate it 3 out of 5.

What's open in August

  • Open Ferries — Full summer timetable (to 4 October in 2026). Expect queues at ticket offices mid-morning.

Where to base yourself in August

These are the places that keep some calm in August. Tignale and San Zeno di Montagna are up in the hills, away from the shore-road traffic. Gargnano and Toscolano Maderno, on the western shore, get fewer day trippers than the south and the Veneto side.

What August feels like

The first three weeks are July again: hot, sunny and dry, with about nine hours of sunshine a day. The water has had two months of heat and is at its most inviting.

Towards the end of the month the pattern often breaks with heavier thunderstorms; the monthly rain total (68 mm) is a little above July’s. Evenings begin to draw in.

How to enjoy the lake at its busiest

Travel at the edges of the day. Be on the road or at the ferry pier before 9am and you will see a different lake from the one at 11. Leave the car where you are staying and use the boats; our ferry prices and passes page explains the day tickets.

Choose beaches you can walk to, or the less obvious ones in our beaches map. If you want Gardaland, avoid the week of the 15th.
