Lake Garda is one of the easier places in Italy to marry as a visitor. Several town halls actively welcome foreign couples, hold civil ceremonies in castles and lakeside gardens, and publish their rules and fees in English.

This page covers the types of venue, the three kinds of ceremony, the legal paperwork and the timing. We are not wedding planners and we take no commission from any venue named here. Paperwork rules change and differ by nationality, so treat this as a map and confirm every step with your own authorities and the town hall.

The short version

You can have a legally binding civil wedding on Lake Garda in a castle, a town hall or a municipal garden, a religious wedding in a church, or a symbolic ceremony almost anywhere. The best-documented choice for foreign couples is the Scaliger Castle in Malcesine, where the town hall runs civil ceremonies at 11:00, 14:00 and 17:00 and publishes its fees.

The decision that shapes everything else is whether the ceremony on the lake needs to be legal. A civil ceremony means paperwork in your home country and in Italy, in a fixed order and within fixed time limits. A symbolic ceremony needs none, which is why many couples do the legal part at home.

Venue types and what to know

Where a ceremony can be held depends on the kind of ceremony. A civil wedding is only legal in a place the town hall has approved.

Castles, an island and town-hall venues

Malcesine is the best-known wedding town on the lake, and the reason is the Scaliger Castle. The town hall holds civil ceremonies in two places inside it: the Casermetta, an indoor room near the entrance with a lake view that seats 40 to 50 people with standing room for 20 to 25 more, and the Rivellino, an open terrace below the tower. A third option outside the castle is the Captains’ Palace, whose first-floor hall on the lake seats up to 99.

Ceremonies are held at 11:00, 14:00 or 17:00 and never at the same time as another. The published 2025 fees for couples who do not live in Malcesine are €600 from Monday to Friday, €800 on Saturday and €1,300 on Sunday, with 20% added for the Rivellino terrace and €100 for an interpreter. Staying on in the castle for a drink with your guests is charged separately, from €200 for up to two hours. A deposit is required, and the town hall publishes the coming season’s charges in the autumn, so ask for the current list.

Torri del Benaco offers a smaller castle on the harbour. Ceremonies can be held in an inner hall, on the tower or among the lemon trees of the castle’s old lemon house. We could not find a published fee list, so contact the town hall’s registry office directly.

Isola del Garda is a privately owned island with a villa and gardens off San Felice del Benaco. It hosts both civil and symbolic ceremonies. Civil ceremonies are possible through an agreement with the San Felice town hall, with the town hall’s costs paid separately. The island’s chapel cannot be used for religious weddings. The loggia seats up to 100 for a ceremony and 50 for a meal, and the greenhouse in the park takes up to 100. Guests come over by boat in about 15 minutes from the nearest ports, music must end at midnight, the last boat leaves by 00:30 and nobody can stay overnight. On Saturdays the island is let to one wedding only.

Sirmione lists a set of municipal places for civil ceremonies: Palazzo Callas in Piazza Carducci, Parco Tomelleri, the Spiaggia delle Muse near the castle, the Giardino Grazia Deledda, Piazzale Orti Manara by the Grottoes of Catullus, and the Casa del Pescatore at Punta Grò. Parco Callas was closed for renovation until the end of June 2026, so check that it is back in use. The town does not publish fees on its tourism site; the registry office gives them on request.

Elsewhere, Salò holds civil weddings in its town hall on the lakefront, and the Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone Riviera has hosted civil weddings since 2023. In the north, Riva del Garda and Arco both have municipal venues.

Villas, hotels and receptions

Most weddings on the lake pair a ceremony in one of the places above with a reception at a hotel, restaurant or villa. A few private properties are approved for civil ceremonies; most are not, and host symbolic ceremonies instead. Always ask a venue which it is, in writing.

We do not quote reception prices because we cannot verify them and they vary with the season, the day of the week and the guest count. Ask every venue for a written quote that states what is included, when music must stop, and whether you must use its caterer. For places to shortlist, our villa picks and luxury hotel picks are a starting point, and restaurants for a small wedding lunch.

Civil, religious or symbolic: which ceremony

  • Civil. Legally binding and recognised abroad. It is conducted in Italian by the mayor or a delegate, with an interpreter if you do not speak Italian, and two witnesses. The legal wording is fixed, though town halls such as Malcesine allow music, readings and flowers around it. It must take place in a venue the town hall has approved.
  • Religious. A Catholic wedding in a church can also have civil effect, provided the priest registers the marriage with the town’s registrar. It is arranged with the parish and needs church paperwork from your home parish as well as the civil documents. Other faiths usually need a civil ceremony too.
  • Symbolic. Not legally binding, so there is no paperwork and no restriction on place, time, language or wording. You marry legally at home before or after. It is the simplest route for couples of different nationalities, and the only route for many private villas and hotel gardens.

Best months for a Lake Garda wedding

The wedding season follows the tourist season. May, June and September are the months we would look at first: warm, long days, everything open, and less heat and crowding than July and August. Our month-by-month weather guide has the detail, with pages for May, June and September.

High summer brings the most reliable weather and the highest prices and visitor numbers, which matters for a castle that stays open to the public. Winter weddings are possible and some town halls charge less in the low season, but many hotels close and, in 2026 to 2027, the only ferry running from 2 November to 12 March is the Torri to Maderno car ferry. If your plan depends on moving guests by boat, check the ferry season first.

How far ahead to book, and choosing a planner

There are two clocks. The venue clock starts early: popular Saturdays in the main season go first, town halls take a deposit to hold a date, and Malcesine only confirms its fees in the autumn before the season. The paperwork clock starts late: documents expire, the US Atto Notorio is valid for 90 days, and the San Francisco consulate asks couples not to make contact more than 90 days before the wedding. Book the date well ahead, and schedule the paperwork backwards from it.

A planner is not required for a civil ceremony. Town halls used to foreign couples deal with you directly, and Malcesine has a dedicated weddings office. A planner earns the fee when you have many guests, a reception to coordinate, boats to book or no time to chase documents. When you choose one:

  • Ask which venues they have worked at on the lake, and speak to a couple they have married there.
  • Ask for an itemised quote that separates their fee from the town hall’s fees and the suppliers’ prices. The town hall’s charges are public, so you can check them.
  • Ask who handles the paperwork appointments and who attends as interpreter.
  • Be wary of anyone who says a private garden is legal for a civil ceremony without naming the town hall approval.

Good to know

Can foreigners legally get married on Lake Garda?

Yes. Foreign couples can have a legally binding civil or religious wedding in Italy without living there. You need proof from your own country that you are free to marry, and the documents required differ by nationality and by town hall.

How much does it cost to get married at Malcesine Castle?

The town hall's published 2025 fees for non-residents are €600 from Monday to Friday, €800 on Saturday and €1,300 on Sunday for the ceremony venue, with 20% more for the Rivellino terrace and €100 for an interpreter. New charges are published each autumn, so confirm the current figures with the weddings office in Malcesine.

What is a Nulla Osta?

It is an official statement that there is no legal obstacle to your marriage. For British citizens it is the Italian name for the certificate of no impediment, obtained from the British Embassy in Rome. US citizens instead swear a statement before a US consular officer in Italy, alongside an Atto Notorio from an Italian consulate.

Can you get married on Isola del Garda?

Yes. The island hosts civil ceremonies, under an agreement with the town hall of San Felice del Benaco, and symbolic ceremonies. Religious weddings cannot be held in its chapel. Guests arrive by boat and cannot stay overnight.

What is the difference between a civil and a symbolic ceremony?

A civil ceremony is legally binding, is conducted in Italian by a town hall official in an approved venue, and needs paperwork. A symbolic ceremony has no legal effect, so it can be held anywhere, in any language, with any wording, and you complete the legal marriage at home.

What is the best month to get married on Lake Garda?

May, June and September give warm weather and long days without the peak-summer crowds and prices. See our Lake Garda weather guide for what each month is like.

Do we need a wedding planner on Lake Garda?

Not for a simple civil ceremony: town halls such as Malcesine deal with couples directly. A planner is worth considering for larger weddings with a reception, guest transport and suppliers to coordinate, or if you cannot manage the paperwork appointments yourself.

Where should wedding guests stay?

Close to the ceremony, because the lake is large and evening transport is limited. For a Malcesine wedding, stay in Malcesine or Brenzone; for Isola del Garda, in San Felice, Salò or Gardone Riviera. Our hotel picks cover each area.
