Verona Villafranca is the closest airport to Lake Garda and ranks first in our guide to the best Lake Garda airports. The airport puts Peschiera del Garda about 20 km away. There is no railway station at the terminal, so every public transport route starts with a bus.

This page compares the four ways of doing it and then gives onward directions to eight towns. Bus times come from ATV’s timetable in force from 10 September 2026; train times and fares are Trenitalia’s for Wednesday 14 October 2026.

The quick answer

Take the ATV Aerobus (line 199) from outside arrivals to Verona Porta Nuova station: every 20 minutes for most of the day, 15 minutes, €7.00. From Porta Nuova, regional trains reach Peschiera del Garda in 13 to 17 minutes and Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione in 21 to 26 minutes. Trenitalia sells both legs as one ticket: €11.05 to Peschiera, €11.80 to Desenzano.

From late March to mid October, check ATV bus 482 first. It runs directly from the airport to Peschiera centre in 40 minutes, about once an hour between 09:25 and 19:25, and connects there with bus 483 for Lazise, Bardolino, Garda and Malcesine.

Fastest
Hire car or taxi: Peschiera is about 20 km away. By public transport, the Aerobus and a regional train take from 41 minutes.
Cheapest
Aerobus plus regional train on one Trenitalia ticket: €11.05 to Peschiera, €11.80 to Desenzano.

  1. Any day of the year; Peschiera, Desenzano and Sirmione

Aerobus 199 to Verona Porta Nuova, then a regional train

    • From 41 minutes to Peschiera
    • €11.05 to Peschiera, €11.80 to Desenzano
    • Bus every 20 minutes; regional trains about hourly, plus faster Frecciarossa
    • Not needed. Buy at the airport machine, on the bus by bank card, or as one ticket from Trenitalia

The Aerobus stops at the arrivals exit. From the airport the first bus is at 05:35, then 06:30 and every 20 minutes until 20:30, then 21:10, 21:50, 22:30 and a last bus at 23:10. It arrives at bay E1 in front of Verona Porta Nuova station 15 minutes later. The single fare is €7.00 and the ticket is valid for 75 minutes, including on Verona city buses. Buy it at the machine in the arrivals hall or on board by bank card at no extra cost.

From Porta Nuova, 18 regional trains a day run to Peschiera del Garda (first 05:43, last 21:43, €4.05) and on to Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione (€4.80). Frecciarossa trains stop at both as well but cost from €15 for the same quarter of an hour. If you choose “Verona Aeroporto” as your starting point on the Trenitalia site or app, the bus is added to the train ticket automatically.

The catch: a flight landing after about 21:00 leaves you short of trains. The last regional services from Porta Nuova towards the lake leave at 21:43 and 21:53.

  2. Peschiera and the east shore in season, without going into Verona

ATV bus 482 direct to Peschiera del Garda

    • 40 minutes to Peschiera centre
    • ATV extra-urban fare (see ATV fare table)
    • About hourly, 09:25 to 19:25, daily until 18 October 2026 and again from 21 March 2027
    • Not needed. Ticket machine in arrivals, the Ticket Bus Verona app or on board

Line 482 leaves from the airport and runs via Villafranca and Valeggio sul Mincio to Peschiera centre, Camping Bella Italia and San Benedetto di Lugana. On the current timetable it departs at 09:25, 10:25, 11:25, 12:25, 13:25, 15:25, 16:25, 17:25, 18:25 and 19:25 (there is no 14:25) and reaches Peschiera centre 40 minutes later.

At Peschiera centre it meets bus 483, which leaves at 25 past the hour for Lazise, Bardolino, Garda, Torri del Benaco, Brenzone and Malcesine. An airport departure at 09:25 gets you to Garda at 10:57 with that one change.

The catches: it is seasonal, it does not stop at Peschiera railway station, and the last bus is early in the evening. ATV says the 482 has its own fare and that Aerobus tickets bought online are not valid on it; single extra-urban fares on ATV’s table run from €1.50 to €6.70 depending on distance, with a €0.50 supplement if you pay the driver. ATV’s 1-day pass (€11.00) covers its city and provincial bus lines.

  3. The west shore, the hills, two-base trips and late arrivals

    Hire car

    • Book ahead in summer

Nine companies have desks at the airport, including Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Sicily By Car and Locauto. The offices are on the ground floor outside the arrivals terminal; you sign there first, then follow the covered walkway to the left for about 50 metres to the Rent a Car car park.

For the lake the airport’s own directions are to join the A22 northbound and follow signs for the lakeside towns. Peschiera is about 20 km away; by our route check Lazise is about 25 km, Bardolino 30 km, Garda and Desenzano about 40 km, Malcesine about 65 km and Riva del Garda about 85 km. Our Lake Garda car hire guide compares the companies.

The catch is at the other end: lakeside old towns are closed to visitor traffic and summer parking is paid almost everywhere, so ask your accommodation about a space before you commit.

  4. Families, groups, heavy luggage and flights after the last bus

    Taxi or pre-booked transfer

    • By quote or meter; no fixed lake fares are published
    • On demand
    • Rank outside arrivals, or book by phone in advance

The airport lists three taxi companies: Unione Radio Taxi (+39 045 532666), Taxi & Auto Blu (+39 045 8581403) and Radiotaxi Catullo (+39 045 2223525). It says fares vary with destination, time and day, and advises asking the driver or the company what will be charged before you get in. Most taxis take cards, but confirm it first.

We could not find a published fixed fare from the airport to any lake town, so we do not quote one. Ask for a price to your exact address when you book, and compare it with a private transfer arranged through your hotel or campsite, which many of them offer. Chauffeur services and Uber are also available at the airport.

Step by step

  1. Leave by the arrivals exit

The ATV stop is outside the terminal on the arrivals side. Line 199 is the Aerobus to the station; line 482 is the seasonal bus to Peschiera.

  2. Buy your ticket

Use the ATV machine in the arrivals hall or tap a bank card on board the Aerobus (€7.00, no surcharge). If you bought a through ticket from "Verona Aeroporto" on Trenitalia, the bus is already included.

  3. Ride 15 minutes to Verona Porta Nuova

The bus stops at bay E1 in the forecourt directly in front of the station. Buses for Lazise, Bardolino and Garda leave from the same forecourt.

  4. Take a regional train towards Brescia or Milan

Peschiera del Garda is the first lake stop, 13 to 17 minutes away; Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione is the next, 21 to 26 minutes. A paper regional ticket must be stamped in the machine on the platform before boarding.

  5. Continue from the station

At Peschiera, ATV buses and the ferry pier serve the east shore. At Desenzano, Arriva buses leave from Via Masaccio in front of the station for Sirmione and Salò.

From Peschiera del Garda, Desenzano and the east shore to the towns

  • Peschiera del Garda Aerobus and regional train, or direct bus 482 in season From 41 minutes by bus and train; 40 minutes by bus 482
  • Desenzano del Garda Aerobus, then regional train from Porta Nuova (21 to 26 minutes, €4.80) From 50 minutes
  • Sirmione Train to Desenzano or Peschiera, then Arriva bus LN026 (fare B, €2.20)

  • Malcesine Bus 482, then bus 483 from Peschiera (hourly in season) Bus 483 takes about 1 hour 15 minutes from Peschiera
  • Riva del Garda Aerobus, regional train to Rovereto (46 to 64 minutes, €6.95), then Trentino Trasporti bus B332

Which lake station to aim for

“Lake Garda” is not a station. The Milan to Venice railway touches the lake at two places: Peschiera del Garda, at the south-east corner, and Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione, at the south-west. Coming from Verona, Peschiera is the first stop and Desenzano the second.

Use Peschiera for Lazise, Bardolino, Garda, Malcesine and the theme parks. Use Desenzano for Desenzano itself, Salò and the west shore. Sirmione sits between the two and has a bus from both. For the north end, the nearest station is Rovereto on the Brenner line. Our Verona to Lake Garda train page goes through the rail leg stop by stop.

The east shore by bus from Verona station

If you are staying in Lazise, Bardolino or Garda and the 482 is not running, you do not need a train at all. ATV bus 164 leaves from the forecourt of Verona Porta Nuova, where the Aerobus drops you, and runs via Peschiera station and Gardaland up the shore. On the weekday timetable a bus leaving the station at 08:36 reaches Peschiera at 09:16, Lazise at 09:30, Bardolino at 09:40 and Garda at 09:45. Bus 163 takes an inland route through Bussolengo to the same three towns.

There are around a dozen departures on weekdays and fewer on Sundays and holidays, so look at the timetable before choosing this over the train. The Trenitalia site sells these buses together with a train ticket under the name Garda Link.

Arriving late or leaving early

The Aerobus covers most flights: 05:35 to 23:10 from the airport and 05:15 to 22:50 from the station. The gap is in the connections. The last regional trains from Porta Nuova towards Peschiera and Desenzano leave at 21:43 and 21:53, there is a late Frecciarossa to Peschiera at 22:20, and the last 482 leaves the airport at 19:25.

If you land after about 21:00, book a transfer or a hire car in advance, or spend the first night in Verona, which is no hardship. For an early flight home, the first regional train from Peschiera and the first Aerobus are the things to check; our Lake Garda to Verona train page has the return timings.

Passes worth knowing about

ATV sells passes for 1 day (€11.00), 3 days (€22.00) and 7 days (€44.00) that cover every ATV city and provincial bus, including the Aerobus. If you plan to use the lake buses during your stay, starting the pass at the airport makes the €7.00 transfer part of it. Passes are sold at the airport machine, ATV ticket offices, tourist offices and in the Ticket Bus Verona app. They do not cover trains or ferries.

The last regional trains from Porta Nuova towards the lake are at 21:43 and 21:53, so late arrivals should plan a taxi, a transfer or a night in Verona.
