High-speed trains from Venice stop at Verona and then at one of the lake stations. On this hop they save a minute or four and cost three to four times the regional fare, so buy one only if it is the train that happens to be leaving. The one useful exception is late evening: a Frecciarossa left Verona at 22:20 for Peschiera after the last regional had gone.

Step by step

  1. Buy a regional ticket

Any Trenitalia machine at Porta Nuova sells it; choose "Peschiera del Garda" or "Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione". The fare is the same whenever you buy.

  2. Look for the Milan or Brescia train

The lake stations are intermediate stops, so the departure board shows the final destination, usually Milano Centrale or Brescia.

  3. Validate and board

Stamp a paper ticket in the machine on the platform or in the underpass.

  4. Get off at Peschiera or Desenzano

Peschiera is the first or second stop, Desenzano the next. Buses and the Gardaland shuttle wait outside.

Train or bus from Verona?

The railway only reaches the south shore, so the choice depends on the town. For Peschiera, Gardaland, Sirmione and Desenzano, the train wins easily.

For Lazise, Bardolino and Garda, the direct ATV bus from the station forecourt is simpler than a train to Peschiera followed by the same bus line anyway. For Torri del Benaco, Brenzone and Malcesine the bus is the only public option; ATV line 484 runs from Garda up to Riva all year.

ATV single fares run in bands from €1.50 to €6.70, and buying from the driver costs €0.50 more on all but the shortest band.

Getting to the north of the lake from Verona

Riva del Garda, Torbole and Arco are reached from Verona on a different railway. Take a regional train on the Brenner line to Rovereto, between 46 minutes and an hour for €6.95 and at least hourly, then Trentino Trasporti bus B332 from Rovereto station.

The alternative is the ATV lake bus all the way up the east shore via Garda and Malcesine, which is scenic and slow.

Last trains and late arrivals

On the weekday we checked, the last regional trains from Verona to the lake left at 21:43 and 21:53, followed by a Frecciarossa to Peschiera only at 22:20. If your flight or long-distance train lands later than that, plan on a taxi or a night in Verona.

Engineering work sometimes replaces a train with a bus on this stretch: one early-afternoon service was a bus when we looked. The planner flags these, so check on the day.
