Venice is the day trip most people on the lake want to make, and the train is the way to do it: no bridge tolls, no parking at Piazzale Roma, and you step out of the station straight onto the Grand Canal.

This page is about timing the day from the lake and getting home again. If you are travelling from Venice to start a lake holiday, read the train from Venice to Lake Garda.

Quick answer

Start from Peschiera del Garda if you are on the east or south shore: the 07:03 direct regional reaches Venezia Santa Lucia at 08:52 for €13.55, and the first direct Frecciarossa leaves at 08:14 and arrives at 09:44. From Desenzano the direct regional leaves at 06:54 and the first direct Frecciarossa at 09:08.

Coming back, the last trains that ran all the way by rail on the weekday we checked were the 19:48 Frecciarossa to Desenzano and the 20:10 regional to both stations. That gives roughly ten hours in Venice.

    • €13.55 from Peschiera, €14.05 from Desenzano, each way
    • Hourly with a change at Verona; one direct morning train
    • No booking. Machines, Trenitalia site or app

The 07:03 from Peschiera (06:54 from Desenzano) runs through to Santa Lucia. After that, take the hourly Trenord regional at 58 past from Peschiera (49 past from Desenzano) and change at Verona Porta Nuova onto the Regionale Veloce for Venice, about 1h 54min in all from Peschiera. Going towards Venice the Verona connection is quick; coming back it is slow, which is why the evening needs more thought.

  2. A later start and a faster ride home

    Frecciarossa (Trenitalia)

    • 1h 30min from Peschiera, 1h 36min from Desenzano
    • From €13.90 well ahead; €17.90 to €26.90 a week ahead
    • About 7 direct from Peschiera and 10 from Desenzano on a weekday
    • Reserved seat on a named train. Trenitalia

First direct trains were 08:14 from Peschiera and 09:08 from Desenzano. Two EuroCity trains from Peschiera (11:14 and 13:14) take the same 1h 30min. For the evening, the Frecciarossa is much the best way back, so this is the leg worth booking in advance.

  3. Cheap advance fares from Desenzano

    Italo

    • 1h 32min from Desenzano
    • From €11.90
    • A few a day
    • Italo site or app only

Italo links Desenzano with Venezia Santa Lucia and offers a same-day return fare. Tickets are valid only on Italo trains.

Step by step

  1. Book the return first

Choose your evening train from Venice, then work backwards. The 19:48 Frecciarossa (Desenzano 21:21) and the 20:10 regional (Peschiera 22:08, Desenzano 22:17) were the last all-rail options.

  2. Catch the early train out

07:03 from Peschiera or 06:54 from Desenzano for the direct regional; 08:14 or 09:08 for the first Frecciarossa.

  3. Arrive at Santa Lucia, not Mestre

Stay on past Venezia Mestre and over the lagoon bridge to the terminus. The vaporetto stops are directly outside the station.

  4. Be back at the station in good time

Santa Lucia is at the far end of the Grand Canal from St Mark's. Leave a generous margin for the walk or the vaporetto back.

  • Lazise ATV bus or taxi to Peschiera station
  • Bardolino ATV bus to Peschiera station, or ATV bus to Verona Porta Nuova and train from there
  • Garda ATV bus to Peschiera or Verona Porta Nuova, then train
  • Sirmione Arriva bus LN026 to Desenzano or Peschiera station
  • Desenzano del Garda Walk to Desenzano station; direct regional 06:54, Frecciarossa 09:08 From 1h 36min
  • Salò RegioLink 204 to Desenzano station (from 7:00), then train

Which station from which shore

East shore and Peschiera: use Peschiera del Garda. It is the closer station to Venice and has the 07:03 direct regional. From Bardolino and Garda you can also take the ATV bus to Verona Porta Nuova and join a Venice train there, which opens up more departures.

Sirmione, Desenzano and the west shore: use Desenzano. It has more direct Frecciarossa trains to Venice than Peschiera, though the first is not until 09:08.

North of the lake: from Riva or Malcesine a Venice day trip by public transport means a bus to Rovereto or Peschiera before a train of 90 minutes or more. It can be done, but an organised coach trip or an overnight stay is kinder.

The last trains back, and the gap to avoid

From Venice the regional trains at 10 past the hour connect badly at Verona in the lake direction: most combinations took around 2h 46min to Peschiera. So the workable evening trains are the direct ones. On Wednesday 14 October 2026 those were Frecciarossa at 17:18 and 17:48 to Peschiera, 16:48, 18:18 and 19:48 to Desenzano, and the 20:10 direct regional to both.

We found no later all-rail option after the 20:10, so missing it means a night in Venice. Check your own date carefully; engineering work on the Verona–Venice line changes evening services from time to time.

Also check the last bus at the lake end before you settle on an arrival at Peschiera at 22:08.

What Santa Lucia is near

Venezia Santa Lucia is in Cannaregio at the north-west end of the Grand Canal. Vaporetto lines along the canal stop right outside, and Rialto and St Mark’s can also be reached on foot through the lanes.

With ten hours you can walk to Rialto, see St Mark’s Square and the basilica, ride the vaporetto the length of the canal and still have time to get lost on purpose. Leave Murano and Burano for another trip.
