Lake Garda weather · May
May is one of the best months at Lake Garda: 24 °C days, summer ferries from mid-month and far fewer people than July.
If you can choose your dates freely, look hard at May. This page explains why we rate it at the top, and the two things it does not do well: swimming and guaranteed dry days.
Yes. May is one of the three best months of the year. Afternoons average 24 °C, nights 12.5 °C, and there are about eight hours of sunshine a day.
Everything is open, and from mid-month the ferries switch to the full summer timetable (16 May in 2026). The compromises are a lake that is still only about 16.5 °C and roughly eight days with some rain, often an afternoon thunderstorm. We rate it 5 out of 5.
Three days of mountain bike races, guided tours and a bike expo on the lakeside promenade.
Malcesine and Limone are at their prettiest before the day-trip crowds of summer, and the summer ferry links them from mid-May. Torbole is the choice for wind sports as the Ora strengthens. Garda town has easy walking on the Rocca and along the shore.

Like an English summer on a good day. You can eat outside at lunch and, with a layer, at dinner. Daylight is long and the hills are still green.
May is slightly wetter than April in total (71 mm) but with fewer wet days. The rain is more likely to arrive as a heavy late-afternoon shower over the mountains than as a grey day. In the north, the water sports season is properly under way.
Everything except long swims. Take the cable car up Monte Baldo for alpine flowers, walk the old Ponale road above Riva, or cycle the east shore between Garda and Lazise. Our walks and bike rides guides have the routes.
Once the summer timetable starts, a day on the boats becomes practical again. See how the ferries work.
One of the best. Average highs of 24 °C, about eight hours of sun a day, everything open and lighter crowds than in summer. Only the swimming is not yet at its best.
For a quick dip, yes; for a long swim, most people will find it cold. The lake was measured at 16.5 °C in May on the north shore. By July it is around 23 °C.
Expect about eight days with some rain and 71 mm in total. Much of it comes in short, heavy showers or thunderstorms, with sunshine before and after.
In 2026 it started on 16 May and ran until 4 October. The 2027 dates had not been published when we checked. Our ferry timetables page links to the operator's current timetable.
Midweek it is calm. Weekends are livelier, and the public holiday on 1 May brings Italian visitors. It is much quieter than July and August.
