Lake Garda Weather and Temperatures: Month by Month
Average temperatures, rain, sunshine and lake temperature for every month, and the best time to visit Lake Garda for what you want to do.
This page settles when to come. The table below gives the long-term averages for each month, and each month has its own page with what is open, what is on and what to pack.
One thing to know before you read the numbers: they come from the official weather station at Verona Villafranca airport, just inland from the south-east corner of the lake. It is the nearest station with full published 1991–2020 normals. The shore itself is a little milder on winter nights, and the north has its own wind pattern, which we explain further down.
When is the best time to visit Lake Garda?
May, June and September. Average highs run from 24 °C in May to 28 °C in June and 25 °C in September, the ferries are on their summer timetable from mid-May to early October, and Gardaland and the Monte Baldo cable car are both open.
July and August are the hottest and sunniest months (highs of about 30 °C, around 10 hours of sunshine a day in July) and the best for swimming, but they are also the busiest. From early November to mid-March most of the lake shuts down: the passenger boats stop, Gardaland closes apart from its Christmas opening and the cable car has its maintenance break.

The best month for…
- Swimming
- July to early September — The lake was measured at about 23 °C in July and August and still close to 21 °C in September. In June it was 18.5 °C, which is fresh.
- Hiking
- May, June, September, early October — Highs of 19–28 °C and the Monte Baldo cable car running (4 April to 1 November in 2026). July and August are hot at lake level, so start early or go high.
- Cycling
- April to June, September and October — Warm days without the 30 °C afternoons of high summer. April and November share the most rainy days, so keep a spare day in April.
- Windsurfing and sailing
- May to September — The Ora, the afternoon south wind, blows from March to October and is strongest in high summer. Riva and Torbole at the narrow north end get the most of it.
- Fewer crowds
- May, late September, early October — Everything is open, the Italian school holidays have not started or have ended, and you can still eat outside most days.
- Lowest prices
- November to March, outside Christmas — The quiet season. The trade-off is real: no passenger ferries from early November to mid-March and many lakeside hotels closed.
- Theme parks
- June and September, on weekdays — Gardaland is in full season with long days and no August queues. In October the park is open daily until 1 November with Halloween theming.
- Wine harvest
- Late September and early October — Bardolino holds its Festa dell’Uva e del Vino on the lakefront at the turn of the month (30 September to 4 October in 2027).
North and south have different climates
Lake Garda is long enough to have two characters. The south (Sirmione, Desenzano, Peschiera) is wide, open and surrounded by low hills. It behaves much like the Verona figures in our table, with hot, still afternoons in July and August, and it is generally slightly warmer than the north.
The north (Riva, Torbole, Malcesine, Limone) is a narrow trench between mountains. The air funnels through it, so there is wind on most fine days, mornings feel cooler than the thermometer says, and the high ground behind the towns catches more showers. In winter the mountains above are snow-covered while the shore usually is not.
The water also softens the cold. At Salò, on the western shore, the 1981–2010 average January low published by ISPRA is 1.6 °C, against -0.5 °C at Villafranca in our table. So read our night-time winter figures as the cold end of what you will meet on the shore. Fog is also less common on the lake than on the Po plain behind it.
The winds: Pelèr and Ora
Two winds run the lake like a clock on settled days, and they matter even if you never set foot on a board. They decide which side of a ferry is comfortable, when the water is flat for a paddle and when a lakeside lunch needs a jumper.
The Pelèr blows from the north. According to Garda Trentino, the tourist board for the north shore, it usually starts between 2 and 3 in the morning and stops around noon, first on the upper and middle lake and then further south as the sun rises. It can reach 13 metres per second and it raises waves. It blows all year.
The Ora takes over from the south from around noon until sunset. It is strongest in high summer, very weak in winter, and most powerful at the north end, where the lake narrows and squeezes the air. The board gives its season as March to October.
There are others. The Balinot is a gusty north-westerly that follows thunderstorms or a sharp drop in temperature, and the Vinessa is a south-easterly that can blow for two or three days when there is bad weather over the Adriatic. If you are hiring a boat, ask the operator about the day’s wind before you leave the harbour. Our boat rental guide lists the hire bases.
Lake water temperature through the year
There is no long official series of lake temperatures published by month, so the lake column in our table uses a single year of readings, 2020, taken at the north end and printed by Garda Trentino. Treat it as a guide to the shape of the year, not a promise.
The pattern is clear enough. The lake is at its coldest in February (9.3 °C in that year), climbs slowly through spring to 16.5 °C in May and 18.5 °C in June, then jumps to about 23 °C in July and August. It cools slowly: 20.7 °C in September and 16.5 °C in October. A deep lake holds its heat, which is why September swimming is better than June swimming.
The north end is where the cold River Sarca flows in and where the wind stirs the water most, so shallow southern bays such as those around Sirmione and Manerba can feel warmer on a calm summer day. For where to get in, see our best Lake Garda beaches.
Lake Garda in winter
Winter days are short, cool and often clear. Average highs are 7–10 °C from December to February, nights hover around freezing at the Verona station, and January and February are the driest months of the year by rainfall.
What changes most is what you can do. In the 2026–27 season the passenger boats stop after 1 November and do not return until 13 March, leaving only the car ferry between Torri del Benaco and Maderno. Gardaland closes on 1 November and reopens for its Christmas season from 5 December to 6 January. The Monte Baldo cable car shuts for maintenance from 2 November to 25 December, then runs a winter season until 21 February.
The towns that work in winter are the ones where people live all year: Desenzano, Salò, Riva and Arco. From mid-November to Epiphany, Riva and Arco hold Christmas markets. See December and January for the details, and our ferry timetables page before planning any winter crossing.
Good to know
What is the best month to visit Lake Garda?
What is the hottest month at Lake Garda?
July, with an average high of 30.4 °C and an average low of 18.9 °C at the Verona Villafranca station. August is almost identical at 30.2 °C. Both are also the months with the fewest rainy days of the summer.
When is the rainy season at Lake Garda?
There is no true dry or wet season, but autumn is the wettest part of the year. September and November average about 85 mm each and October 79 mm. February is the driest month at 36 mm. Summer rain mostly comes as short thunderstorms.
Can you swim in Lake Garda in May or October?
You can, but it is cold. The readings we use put the lake at 16.5 °C in both months. Most people find it comfortable from July to mid-September, when it is above 20 °C. Our beach guide has the easiest places to get in.
Does it snow at Lake Garda?
Snow on the shore is unusual and rarely stays. The mountains around the northern half are a different matter, and the Monte Baldo cable car above Malcesine runs a winter season from late December to late February.
Is Lake Garda worth visiting in winter?
Yes, if you want quiet towns, clear views and Christmas markets, and you choose a year-round town such as Desenzano, Salò, Riva or Arco. No, if you want boat trips, beaches or theme parks: the passenger ferries stop from early November to mid-March and many lakeside hotels and campsites close.
